Many laptop users, especially businessmen, tourists and students, cannot imagine their life without the laptop. Since it is portable, it can be taken on board a ship to view business presentations or send/get e-mails from co-workers or business partners. Nevertheless, the laptops cannot operate 24/7 non-stop. Now and then its battery needs re-charging. Hardly has any person thought some the first laptop batteries and their power. In fact, the history of laptop batteries is an exciting one. They have already come along way, but they still have a long way ahead before they become perfect. When we think about laptop batteries, many of us think about the rechargeable ones that we use at present. However, several decades ago AA batteries were widely used in laptops. It took a great many AA batteries to run a laptop. More than that, it could not run for long. Some users remember the heavy lead acid based batteries. Neither lasted they long, nor were they light.Since then the manufacture of laptop batteries has changed. Lead acid based batteries were replaced by lighter nickel cadmium batteries (NiCd). Nevertheless, these batteries were not used much, because nickel metal hydride batteries (also known as NiMH) were introduced. They lasted far longer and were lighter. Their downside was the so-called memory defect they had. If not discharged completely, the NiMH battery remembered it and its output was lower.A tremendous step towards progress in laptop batteries manufacture was taken when lithium ion batteries (LiON) entered the market. These batteries are much lighter than other laptop batteries and have not got any memory effect. They are deployed in technically advanced laptops.Though LiON batteries run for several hours non-stop, they need re-charging. As more and more people get laptops every year, the demand for longer lasting batteries is speedily increasing. Certainly, there will be innovations until laptop batteries that do not require re-charging are produced. Regardless of the purpose you power on your laptop for, you know that you need a long-lasting battery. You need to know the battery will not go dead when you need your portable pc most of all.
